city anchor: Helping the needy girls stand on their feet

NGO Tammana, working for almost four years, has now set their sights on a new task.

NGO Tammana, working for almost four years, has now set their sights on a new task. All the 75 active members, the majority of which are students, have started working on Gur Asra trust at Palsora village.

“Gur Asra is a trust that owns 44 orphans, disowned girls and three elderly women. Our NGO chose to work on these girls because having grown up in a rural environment, they need more care to reach upto the level of urban girls,” says Isha Kakaria, president of NGO Tammana.

The NGO provides facilities and training to all the girls in various skills, helping them have a dignified and independent future. The members of the NGO say that weekly sessions are conducted for cooking, creative writing, dance classes, and also knitting for older women.

“Only through these baby steps, can we achieve spreading awareness amongst girls about facing challenges in life and realising their talent,” says Charmi Sahni, another active member who takes bi-weekly sessions on the trust premises.

The members also claim to have established a small sports room containing indoor activities like chess, carrom, puzzles, snakes and ladders where young girls can spend some time in recreational activities, apart from regular cooking and cleaning. Also,a library, named after the NGO,has been set up where books collected from various sources is provided to the girls.

“The trust authorities do not allow girls to continue schooling after grade VII. We are focusing on educating these girls on the trust premises itself so that they (girls) are not merely confined to the household activities once they grow up but also get educated and contribute in some way towards society,” adds Kakaria.

“Challenges faced in the intial days were many. Girls lived in ungygienic conditions for which we conduct weekly classes and check their upkeep. Also, there is a shortage of teaching staff. We provide them motivational sessions,” says Amandeep,a BTech student.
