If Pablo Picasso painted his outrage towards the Spanish Civil War in Guernica,M F Husain responded to the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy in Bhopal. The oil on canvas shows corpses scattered on green fields as smoke floats above them. “The subject might be macabre, but that’s what makes it a landmark work. Husain paints with bright colours to give the grim reality of destruction power and a flicker of light,” says Nour Aslam,Head of Modern and Contemporary South Asian and Middle Eastern Art,Bonham’s. Estimated between £2,00,000 and £3,00,000,the work will come under the hammer at the Bonham’s auction of Indian and Islamic art in London on

October 8.

The auction’s other highlights include SH Raza’s Bindu, valued between £1,00,000 and £1,50,000 and FN Souza’s Untitled estimated between £40,000 and £60,000. Pakistani artist Sadequain’s oil on canvas Four Figures, perceived to have an affinity with Western style of painting,is estimated between £45,000 and £65,000.
