A day after a farmer was mauled to death by a tiger in Saragur taluk under Mysuru district near the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre Monday said his department would act against officials if negligence was found in taking preventive measures.
He made the remark while responding to complaints that Forest Department officials failed to set up a cage to capture the tiger despite locals alerting them about the feline.
The minister also objected to the decision of locals to bring the body of the deceased farmer to Mysuru, when a post-mortem was conducted at Saragur itself. “We will investigate this and take necessary steps,” he told reporters.
The farmer, identified as Rajashekara, 54, was killed by the tiger when he was herding his cattle at Mulluru, bordering the Reserve. In a release issued the same day, the minister had warned people of the dangers of herding animals near the reserve forests and asked them to be cautious about attacks from tigers, leopards, elephants and other wild animals.
The attack on the farmer comes a week after another Karnataka farmer suffered permanent loss of vision owing to a tiger attack. Forest officials were carrying out a combing operation near HD Kote when the victim was attacked by the tiger.
