Former PM Deve Gowda writes to Karnataka CM seeking withdrawal of controversial textbooks

In the wake of recent protests in Karnataka over the alleged saffronisation of school textbooks, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda has written to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai demanding the withdrawal of textbooks revised recently by the Rohith Chakrathirtha committee appointed by the ruling BJP government in the state.

“The mistakes and injustices that exist in the revised textbook cannot be corrected by mere cosmetic changes. The revised textbooks should be withdrawn and the previous textbooks that were revised by 27 committees working under the leadership of Baraguru Ramachandrappa must be utilised for the current academic year,” Deve Gowda has said in a letter to Bommai dated June 20 read more

Bengaluru: Man from Kerala arrested for running illegal telephone exchange

In a joint operation, Military Intelligence of Army’s Southern Command and Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru city have busted an illegal telephone exchange involved in allegedly converting international calls to local calls and arrested a 41-year-old man. According to officials, the fraud came to light when Pakistani intelligence operatives used a SIM box to obtain information from a defence installation.

The arrested accused has been identified as Sharafudeen, a native of Wayanad in Kerala, who lives in Bengaluru. He has been accused of illegally creating a telephone exchange by placing several mobile SIM cards into electronic devices to convert foreign phone calls into local calls and thereby defrauding the telecommunication network and disrupting the country’s security read more

Engineering student electrocuted at Bengaluru college fest, case filed against management

A Computer Science engineering student at Sambhram Institute of Technology in north Bengaluru died last week in an electrocution incident amid heavy rains during the cultural college festival on June 17.

PM Modi’s two-day visit to Karnataka: All you need to know

Ahead of PM's visit to Karnataka, Siddaramaiah raises host of issues

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Karnataka, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Siddaramaiah has questioned him on a slew of issues in a series of tweets with "#AnswerMadiModi", including on the "delay" in granting approval to Mekedatu project and alleged Hindi "imposition".

"People of Karnataka are looking forward to the implementation of (the) Mekedatu project. Why is the central government reluctant to approve the project?" he asked. He also sought to know whether Tamil Nadu's "pressure or prejudice" towards Karnataka were reasons for it.

Narendra Modi "apologised" to the farmers and repealed anti-farmer laws, the former CM said, adding that, "but your state governments are yet to repeal. Was it just an eye wash or will Modi ask his state counterparts to repeal as well?" (PTI)

Suggesting that the Agnipath scheme may be part of the “hidden agenda” of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy questioned the Centre’s new recruitment policy for the defence forces which has triggered countrywide protests. He also wondered whether the scheme is an attempt by the RSS — the idelogical font of the ruling BJP — to take control of the army on the lines of the Nazi Party in Germany during Adolf Hitler’s time.

Speaking to the media in Ramanagara, the Janata Dal (Secular) leader said: “This is a subject that has to be spoken about in Delhi not here. Who has provided the concept for the Agnipath scheme to the government? Was there a recommendation from a parliamentary committee for this? Was there a proposal to create a new programme called Agnipath to recruit 10 lakh people for the defence forces? Was there a suggestion from the defence establishment? PM Modi's two-day visit to state to commence on Monday

The preparations to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Bengaluru and Mysuru "a grand success" are in full swing, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the state on June 20. PM Modi will be addressing a public rally at the Kommaghatta grounds in Yeshwanthpur constituency.

According to Bommai, PM Modi is scheduled to arrive at Yelahanka airbase at 11.55 am and reach the Indian Institute of Science by helicopter to participate in two programs. There, he will inaugurate the Brain Cell Research Centre established at a cost of Rs 450 crore by Kris Gopalakrishnan and lay the foundation stone for an 850-bed Research Hospital being built by the MindTree.

He also informed that the Suburban Rail project for Bengaluru will also take off on the same day as the Prime Minister would lay the foundation for a Rs 15,000 crore project to provide mass transit connectivity from the heart of the city to many localities in the outskirts.

Apart from this, PM Modi would also launch six railway projects. He is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the Satellite Town Ring Road connecting Dabaspet on Tumakuru road with Old Madras Road near Hosakote. (ANI)

Lakes of Bengaluru: BBMP begins rejuvenation of Gowdanakere; activists call desilting process faulty

The BBMP had earlier this year announced that it will restore 54 lakes within the municipal limits. Spread in an extent of 9.57 acre, the Gowdanapalya Lake or the Gowdanakere, located in Bengaluru South, is under the process of being rejuvenated by the civic body this year.

With desilting of the lake underway, conservationists explain that scientific disposal of the desilted soil and rejuvenation adhering to quality standards should be abided by the BBMP. Presently, a huge pile of desilted soil has been kept at the lake bed which the conservationists fear that during heavy showers of rain, a part of it has settled back into the lake. Read more
