Two bike-borne assailants Thursday shot six rounds killing one guard and injuring another before decamping with Rs 93 lakh intended for loading at a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM at Shivaji Chowk in Karnataka’s Bidar, a few metres from the deputy commissioner’s office.
The incident occurred around 11.30 am as cash-loading staff arrived at the busy ATM location. The deceased was identified as Giri Venkatesh, a security guard part of the cash-loading team.
The police have since barricaded all roads leading to Shivaji Chowk and formed multiple teams to track down the suspects.
CCTV footage and other videos shot by the public revealed the robbers waiting for the cash management team. Armed with guns, they followed the staff and opened fire, causing panic among bystanders. A video captured one security guard attempting to protect the cash chest but collapsing after being shot. His colleague initially retreated but later joined the effort to thwart the robbers.
The footage also showed the robbers struggling during their escape. One parked the bike near the cash-handling vehicle, while the other, carrying the cash chest, stumbled under its weight. Both robbers struggled to secure the chest on the bike’s fuel tank before fleeing. Onlookers were seen rushing to assist the injured security guards.
Another video showed one of the guards writhing in pain after sustaining gunshot wounds. Sources revealed the robbers first threw chili powder at the guards to disable them before firing a handgun.
Pradeep Gunte, Superintendent of Police, Bidar, visited the spot.
