The Bengaluru police Monday arrested a 45-year-old professor employed at a private university for allegedly sexually harassing a 19-year-old student at his home last month. The police later released the accused on station bail.
He was booked under Section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a complaint filed by a third-year Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) student with the local police.
According to her statement, the accused invited her to his home for lunch on September 25, claiming his wife and children would be present. He allegedly spoke to her mother, reassuring her about the family gathering.
Trusting his assurances, the mother permitted her daughter to go with him, she said. However, while parking his scooter near his apartment, he allegedly revealed to her that no one else was home. When the student hesitated, he persuaded her by saying she would be safe with him, she alleged.
Inside the house, he allegedly sat beside her on a sofa and began asking personal questions. She alleged that he pressured her to break up with her boyfriend and move into a paying guest accommodation near his apartment for regular visits to “clear doubts”.
He also allegedly promised assistance with marks, money, and attendance. Despite her objections, he allegedly touched her inappropriately.
In the meantime, the student received a call from a friend, as per her statement. She said the accused asked her not to answer the call, but she informed her friend of her location. he then allegedly claimed he was merely “testing her loyalty” towards her boyfriend and warned her not to disclose the incident to anyone.
