Suspected water contamination has resulted in deaths of two people and the hospitalisation of 78 others in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district.
Manjula (23) and Raghu (27), both residents of Kavadigarahatti village, died on Tuesday. While Manjula died at the district hospital, Raghu died in Bengaluru, where he had travelled to. He developed a stomachache and started vomiting. It was the Bengaluru police that informed his family members about the death.
Manjula’s family has accused a person named Suresh of poisoning a water tank owing to a personal rivalry. According to Manjula’s father-in-law Ramanna, Suresh’s daughter had eloped with a boy from their family.
Municipality officials have collected water samples to ascertain the cause of the contamination.
Among the 78 people who fell ill, 18 were admitted to the district hospital, while the remaining 60 received treatment at a private hospital.
