The Panchmahals police arrested former Panderwada sarpanch Anil Modi, now elected as a delegate in Khanpur Taluka Panchayat on a BJP ticket,on Wednesday night in connection with the riots relief scam.
Although police did not get a remand to interrogate the accused, circle police inspector K B Ninama said the warrant against him is non-bailable.
Ninama said a complaint was filed at Bakor Police Station earlier this month by the Panchmahals administration. It said Modi, along with one Ghulam Kharadi and other officials from Khanpur Taluka Development office, had embezzled Rs 1.38 crore by showing fake victims of the 2002 riots. As evidence, police had Modis signatures in the documents pertaining to the damage caused to the houses in the area during the 2002 riots.
When Ninamas predecessor R P Sanghani started an investigation,he found the scam could go well beyond Rs 4.3 crore. Earlier, the accused got a bail from a Lunawada court. However, when we started investigating his involvement, fresh warrants were issued against him, said Ninama.
Earlier this year,Modi was given a ticket by the BJP to contest for Khanpur Taluka Panchayat as a delegate.
Modi also has FIRs registered against him for inciting communal clashes in Panderwada during the 2002 riots but he was never arrested until Wednesday night.
