In the Class X results declared by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) on Saturday, Maths recorded the highest as well as the lowest pass percentage among all major seven subjects.

While Standard Maths recorded the highest pass percentage at 99.45, Basic Maths registered the lowest figure at 83.4. Since the 2021-22 academic year, the state Board has been offering the two options — Basic Maths and Standard Maths — to students.

Further, both the subjects recorded the highest number of students securing 100 marks – over 5,450 in all.

Dinesh Patel, GSHSEB Vice Chairman, told The Indian Express, “Both subjects are different. While Standard Maths is taken by students who prefer science in classes XI and XII, the rest opt for Basic Maths. Looking at the number of students who have appeared in both the subjects, we can also say how many students will choose science in Class XI.”

Among the 6,29,128 students who appeared in the Basic Maths exam, 5,24,671 passed. Among them, 42,788 students secured A1 grade and 55,679 A2 grade. Among the 70,066 who took Standard Maths, 69,678 passed. Among them, 26,743 students secured A1 grade and 16,670 A2 grade.

GSHSEB Chairman Banchha Nidhi Pani said, “Students who prefer Standard Maths are very sure that they would take science and and non-medical stream in higher secondary… usually they are very good in maths. On the other hand, the others go for Basic Maths.”

In 2021-22, for the first time, Class X students appeared for two Maths papers – Basic Maths and Standard Maths. According to an announcement made by the state government in November 2021, Class X students studying Basic Maths could get admission in science stream (B group or medical stream) or humanities or commerce streams in Class XI but not groups A (non-medical) or AB (both medical and non-medical or biology and maths).
