The famous pilgrimage site of Somnath Temple in Saurashtra has set an example in energy conservation by implementing the use of non-conventional lighting in its premises. The temple administration has installed two steetlights which run on solar energy. If the idea is found sustainable, the administration plans to implement it on a larger scale.
Dr Kamlesh Raval, manager,Somnath Temple Trust, said: We have installed two of these lamp posts in front of the inquiry office on a trial basis. The temple administration had consulted energy conservation experts in this regard. We are satisfied with the initial result. If the plan succeeds,we plan to reduce the dependence on traditional lights by installing more of these.
He said solar streetlights also keep insects at bay unlike traditional streetlights.
The temple administration now plans to use solar energy in the guesthouse premises by way of installation of solar water heaters.
He added: The idea is aimed at motivating lakhs of visitors to reduce their dependence on traditional energy,to conserve energy, and to switch to solar energy which is more economical, convenient and in the larger interest of the public.
He added: Lakhs of pilgrims visit Somnath Temple throughout the year and chances are that they might also get inspired to adopt solar energy if they see its successful implementation here.
Our idea will air the message for conservation of energy.
