The sale of tractors in Gujarat has fallen by 31 per cent in April as against the sales clocked during the same month last year, data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) show. The plunge in the state is in contrast to the tractor sales that have risen marginally by 1.48 per cent across India.

Compared to 2,918 tractors sold in April 2022, only 2,009 tractors were sold in the state this year.

Usually, the sales of tractors fall during the pre-monsoon months and sales pick up after monsoon,” Hitendra Nanavati, Gujarat State Chairperson, FADA told The Indian Express.

The tractor was the only vehicle segment in the state to show negative growth last month. The sales of two-wheeers rose by 1.28 per cent, while that of passenger vehicles increased by 7.28 per cent. Three-wheeler sales saw almost 70 per cent growth, while that of commercial vehicles rose by 18.3 per cent during the month.

According to Nanavati, it is usually the small-sized tractors that sell in large numbers in the state. There are 53.2 lakh land-holding farmers in Gujarat as per NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development). Of these, two-thirds, or 36.15 lahks, are small and marginal farmers who either own less than two hectares of agricultural land. There are less than 40,000 large farmers who own 10 hectares or more.
