Congress asks CM to quit as Mehta refuses to assume Lokayukta office

State Congress demanded Wednesday the resignation of Chief Minister Narendra Modi after Lokayukta-designate Justice (retd) R A Mehta wrote to Governor Kamla Beniwal declining to assume office.

State Congress demanded Wednesday the resignation of Chief Minister Narendra Modi after Lokayukta-designate Justice (retd) R A Mehta wrote to Governor Kamla Beniwal declining to assume office.

Equating Mehta’s letter with a charge sheet against Modi, state Congress President Arjun Modhwadia told a press conference: “Modi must step down if he has any morals. But I am sure he will not because he has no morals left.”

He said L K Advani and other national BJP leaders forced B S Yeddyurappa to step down as Chief Minister after then Karnataka Lokayukta made adverse comments against him.

“But Advani and (other) national BJP leaders are silent over Modi. They are following a double standard,” said Modhwadia.

He said the national BJP leadership seemed to have surrendered to Modi as the chief fundraiser of the party. Yeddyurappa,Modhwadia said, was forced to go because he was not a fundraiser.

“I appeal to Advani and BJP not to follow a double standard and seek resignation of Modi.”

Modhwadia also appealed to Mehta to take charge as Lokayukta.

Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela claimed,“Mehta was subjected to mental torture by the Modi government, which forced him to decline the responsibility of Lokayukta.”

Senior counsel at the Gujarat HC Girish Patel said the decision of Mehta was a betrayal to all those people who fought for his appointment. “To assume the Lokayukta office was not Justice Mehta’s personal matter. This decision is a betrayal of all those people. He could have said no then and saved huge amount of public money, time and efforts,” Patel said.
