The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) raised prices of Amul milk by Rs 2 per litre across the state Saturday.
This is the first hike in the milk prices in the state after the Gujarat Assembly elections concluded in December 2022. Sources said rising fodder and transportation prices have contributed to the rise in the cost of milk production.
With the latest hike, the price of Amul Buffalo milk is now Rs 68 per litre, while the price of Amul Gold has gone up to Rs 64 per litre. Amul Shakti is retailed at Rs 58 per litre, while the prices of Amul Cow Milk is Rs 54 per litre, Amul Tazaa is Rs 52 per litre and Amul T-special costs Rs 60 per litre.
Despite the hike, retailers of Amul milk in Gujarat said there was no increase in the commission they get in selling the fresh milk pouches most of which come in 500 millilitre packets.
GCMMF, the apex body of milk cooperatives in the state, usually announces milk price hikes in advance but was silent this time. Jayen Mehta, incharge managing director of GCMMF, did not respond to calls or messages.
In the past six months, the prices of different brands of Amul milk were hiked twice across India by GCMMF but Gujarat was exempted.
Ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, Amul raised prices by Rs 2 per litre in October 2022 and further by another Rs 3 in February this year for all markets, except Gujarat.
The last hike in milk prices enforced in Gujarat was in August 2022.
