Twenty-one people were killed when a tractor carrying about 50 pilgrims was hit by a speeding truck on Ahmedabad-Godhra Highway near Veganpur village in the Panchmahals district on October 27,on the Gujarati New Year day.

Police said the accident took place when most of the passengers from Kantu village of Ghoghamba taluka were in deep sleep. Police said 18 of them died on the spot while three more died during treatment at Godhra Civil Hospital and SSG Hospital in Vadodara.

Police said the villagers from Kantu were returning home after a short religious trip to temples in Kheda district of central Gujarat. Around 12.15 am,their tractor was hit by the speeding truck coming from Madhya Pradesh, which broke the tractor-trolley into three pieces.

“The truck must have been moving at a high speed. It dragged the trolley for almost 100 meters and eventually turned turtle,” said an official at Godhra taluka police station where a complaint was lodged by owner of the tractor Suresh Rathwa against the driver of the truck, who fled the spot after the accident.

Later,CM Narendra Modi announced Rs 1 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased and free treatment for the injured in government hospitals or assistance up to Rs 50,000 for treatment in private hospitals.
