Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi awarded Indian citizenship to 18 Pakistani nationals who had migrated and settled in Ahmedabad, at the office of the Ahmedabad District Collector, minutes before Lok Sabha election dates were announced on Saturday.

“Today is an important day in your lives. From today, you are the citizens of this great country India. As citizens, you will get all the rights and benefits of government schemes,” Sanghavi was quoted as saying in a government statement.

So far, 1,167 refugee Hindus who were staying in Gujarat have been awarded citizenship by the Ahmedabad District Collectorate.

The Gazette of 2016 and 2018 has empowered the district collectors of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Kutch to grant Indian citizenship to individuals of the minority communities of Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Later, the collectors of Anand and Mehsana districts were also added to this list.
