IN the coal blocks allocation probe, CBI has registered an FIR against unknown officials of M/s Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd, Bangalore; unknown officials of Karnataka EMTA Coal Mines Ltd, Bangalore; M/s EMTA through its directors or partners; Gupta Coalfields and Washeries Ltd — currently called Gupta Global Resources Pvt Ltd — through its directors and other unknown persons.

The accused have been booked under IPC Sections of criminal conspiracy and cheating and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. This is the 39th FIR filed by the CBI in connection with coal blocks allocation. Searches were being conducted Thursday by the CBI at a place each in Bangalore, Kolkata, New Delhi and Nagpur in this regard. Six coal blocks in Maharashtra — Kiloni, Manora Deep, and Baranj I to IV —were allocated to Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd in November 2003. According to the CBI, officials of the state PSU Karnataka Power Corporation  who had been allocated coal blocks had allegedly shown undue favour to a joint venture (JV) partner by deliberately ignoring and overlooking a condition of the JV relating to certification of the quality of the coal by an independent inspection agency, thereby causing undue pecuniary advantage to the private partner.
