Popular Bhojpuri and Hindi cinema actor and BJP leader Ravi Kishan is a Member of Parliament in the lower house from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur constituency, the seat which Yogi Adityanath won five times before he took over the charge of UP chief minister.
In 2014, the actor-turned-politician lost Lok Sabha elections from his home constituency-Jaunpur as a Congress candidate. He lost rather miserably to the then-BJP candidate Krishna Pratap Singh, securing just 42,759 (4.25 per cent) votes.
Kishan joined the BJP in 2017 and the saffron party made him the party candidate from Gorakhpur in 2019 General Elections. The announcement of his candidature came as a surprise to the local party leaders, who were expecting a candidate either from the party organisation or from the Gorakhnath temple. However, Kishan was elected from Gorakhpur with a substantial margin.
As an MP, Ravi Kishan hit the headlines when he introduced a private members’ bill on population control in Monsoon Session in 2022. Interestingly, Kishan is the father of three girls and one boy.
He retained his seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections after defeating his nearest opponent Kajal Nishad of SP by just over 1 lakh votes.
Born on 17 July 1969 in Mumbai, Kishan studied up to 12th at Rizvi College Bandra West, Mumbai. His family hails from Kerakat, Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, where Kishan lived for about seven years. The versatile actor started his career as a model in the early 1990s. He then made his acting debut in the Bhojpuri film "Ganga Jamuna Saraswati" in 1994. He has since appeared in over 100 Bhojpuri, Hindi and Telugu films.
