Chirag Paswan BIOGRAPHY

Last Updated : 27 Dec 2024
Chirag Paswan, son of former Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, heads the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and represents the Jamui Lok Sabha constituency. Chirag Paswan initially wanted to pursue a career in Bollywood, and he made his acting debut in the 2011 film Miley Naa Miley Hum. However, the film was a box office flop, and Paswan's acting career never took off. After his failed attempt at Bollywood, Paswan turned to politics. He joined his father's party, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), and he was elected to the Lok Sabha. The 2020 Assembly polls were the first real test for Chirag for two reasons. First, he was in the field without his father for the first time. Second, with LJP having officially walked out of the NDA alliance in Bihar, there was no direct blessing from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Paswan had given his son a free hand and allowed for a power transfer before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, when he had rejoined NDA on the advice of Chirag. The move proved a political hit – LJP won six of the seven seats it contested and emerged as the second-largest party behind BJP. In 2019, Chirag was elected LJP national president. LJP had hit a low in the Grand Alliance and Paswan, for the first time since his debut in Delhi since 1989, was not a Union minister. With a heart ailment detected in 2013, power was transferred to his son, who reworked his father’s politics by joining NDA and won both the 2014 and 2019 elections. Chirag's political prospects were weakened after the split in the LJP in 2022 when his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras broke away from the LJP and formed his own party, the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party. In the run-up to the 2024 general elections, Paswan is expected to focus on mobilizing the Dalit vote in Bihar. Notably, Chirag Paswan successfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Hajipur constituency, a stronghold of his late father. Apart from that, he also secured a place in the Modi-3 cabinet as he was allocated the ministry of food and processing.
