In the 60th US presidential election, Americans are heading to the polls this Tuesday to choose between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump in a highly anticipated and closely contested race.

Additionally, more than three dozen Indian American candidates are running in various local and state elections. US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has emerged as a prominent advocate in this movement, encouraging Indian Americans to actively participate in policymaking by saying “if you are not at the table, you are on the menu.”

California leading in Indian American representation

The largest Indian American population in the country resides in California, with estimates at 900,000. Several candidates will compete for various posts in this state. Prominent names in the race include Adlah Chisti, running for County Supervisor in District 11 and Aliya Chisti, who is vying to get a seat on the City College Board of San Francisco. Other notable names in California are Darshana Patel (State Assembly), Nicole Fernandez (San Mateo City Council), Nithya Raman (Los Angeles City Council), Richa Awasthi (Foster City Council), Sukhdeep Kaur (Emeryville City Council), and Tara Sreekrishnan (State Assembly District 26, Silicon Valley), according to the PTI reports.

California is already represented by influential Indian American politicians, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, whose mother was born in India, and representatives Ro Khanna and Dr. Ami Bera in the House.

Indian American candidates across the US

In one of the battleground states for the presidential election, Michigan, Dr. Ajay Raman contests for Oakland County Commissioner, while Anil Kumar and Ranjeev Puri for State House seats. Arizona too boasts strong representation, with Priya Sundareshan running for State Senate and Ravi Shah for the School Board.

Some other Indian Americans running are also in Pennsylvania. There are several contesting Indian Americans from the State of Pennsylvania, while candidates running for the seat in the State House comprise Anand Patek Anna Thomas and Arvind Venkat; and State Senate candidate Nikil Saval. Anusha Thotakura is running for School Board in Illinois and Nabeel Syed for State House, but in Georgia, Ashwin Ramaswamy might become the youngest person to ever be elected to the State Senate by defeating him in a vote, who faced racial attacks. Chantel Raghu is fighting for County Commissioner, while Pavan Parikh is for County Clerk of Courts in Ohio, and Danny Avula is also fighting an election as Richmond Mayor of Virginia.

Indian Americans are becoming increasingly the face of New York politics too. There are Jeremy Cooney and Manita Sanghvi for the State Senate and Zohran Mamdani for the State Assembly. The candidates in Texas with an Indian American population are Ashika Ganguly in the City Council, Karthik Soora in the State Senate, and Salman Bhojani in the State House.
