Days after US President Donald Trump’s phone call with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President on Friday said that he believes Trump is the key to ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskyy said he will only agree to meet Russian President Putin in-person after a common plan is negotiated with the US and European leaders.
Although Trump had earlier insisted that any deal would be in consultation with Ukraine, he has been less emphatic about the involvement of Europeans – an omission that has infuriated leaders of the continent. The leaders believe any Ukrainian settlement will have profound consequences for European security.
Trump this week upended years of steadfast Washington’s support for Ukraine, and reiterated that it would not be possible for Ukraine to ever join Nato since Putin would not accept it. In his view, Ukraine is aware of this. “I think that’s how it will have to be,” Trump said.
However, speaking on Friday, Zelenskyy says the United States, including the Biden administration, never saw Ukraine as a NATO member.
He also said that the war with Russia strengthened unity between Europe and the US, and he’s proud that Ukraine is part of “such a strong” Europe. He adds that it’s important not to lose “this unity”.
