US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin “in the near future,” after holding a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday. When asked by a reporter during a dinner with technology leaders at the White House if he intended to speak to Putin, Trump replied, “I will be, yeah. We’re having a very good dialogue,” according to the Associated Press (AP).
In Moscow, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russia’s Interfax news agency that for now there were no preparations for talks between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. However, he added that such talks could be arranged quickly if needed, as per Reuters report.
Following the call with Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President posted a statement saying he thanked Trump for his support and described their exchange as “a long and detailed conversation about how to push the situation toward real peace.”
“We discussed various options. The most important: applying the right pressure. Strong measures, particularly economic ones, to force an end to the war. The key to peace is depriving Russia’s war machine of money and resources,” Zelenskyy said.
Trump’s remarks came during a dinner with top technology executives, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, held in the State Dining Room after rain forced the event indoors from the Rose Garden. First Lady Melania Trump was seated beside the president, while Zuckerberg sat across the table.
At the dinner, Trump invited the executives to discuss their companies and investments in the United States. Zuckerberg said his company planned to spend about USD 600 billion through 2028, according to AP.
Earlier in the day, Melania Trump chaired a meeting of the White House’s new Artificial Intelligence Education task force.
