Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited former US President Donald Trump at his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago on Friday for a meeting that could help ease tensions between the two leaders, who forged a close alliance during Trump’s time in the White House.
Videos shared on social media by Israeli PM, captured him, accompanied by his wife Sara, greeting former US President Donald Trump. Trump extended his arms and is seen saying, “Now I’m honoured. Come on in.”
The three then posed for a photo, with a smiling Trump giving a thumbs up.
Netanyahu met Trump, the Republican nominee in the 2024 US presidential race, a day after meeting with Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running against Trump in the 5 November US election.
At the conclusion of a meeting, Trump praised his close relationship with Netanyahu, while also accusing Vice President Harris of making “disrespectful” comments about the Gaza conflict.
“We have a very good relationship,” he said, noting policy changes during his presidency including moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and pulling the United States out of the international nuclear deal with Iran. Taking on the issue with Harris, who had publicly expressed concerns about the impact of Israel’s ongoing Gaza campaign on Palestinian civilians, Trump said, “I think her remarks were disrespectful.”
Netanyahu, seated across from Trump with his advisers, hoped that his US trip would lead to a quicker ceasefire deal and announced that Israel would send a negotiating team to Gaza ceasefire talks in Rome, likely starting early next week.
“I hope so. But I think time will tell,” he told reporters.
The long-serving Israeli leader adjusted his US travel plans to meet Trump, arriving in Palm Beach early on Friday.
