At least 11 people were killed and 48 others wounded in Israeli airstrikes that struck two separate areas in central Beirut on Thursday evening, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
The first strike hit the lower half of an eight-story building in the Ras al-Nabaa area, with ongoing explosions inside. Ambulances quickly responded to the scene, news agency Associated Press reported.
A second airstrike, in the Burj Abi Haidar neighbourhood, resulted in the collapse of an entire building, which was engulfed in flames. No immediate statement was issued by the Israeli military.
Strikes in central Beirut are rare, although Israeli forces have frequently targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs in recent weeks as they continue operations against Hezbollah across Lebanon.
Earlier in the day, a separate Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people in Gaza killed 27 people. The Israeli military stated it had targeted a militant command centre, but witnesses said the strike hit a meeting of aid workers. “There were no militants. There was no Hamas,” said one survivor.
As conflict rages on, Lebanese authorities reported that Israeli shelling and airstrikes have killed 2,169 people and wounded over 10,000 since the war’s outbreak in October.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah attacks have claimed the lives of 28 civilians in northern Israel, and Israel has also suffered military casualties.
This comes amid Israel’s intensified air and ground offensive in Gaza, which has devastated large areas and displaced nearly 90% of the enclave’s population, according to local health officials.
