Hezbollah has confirmed the killing of Hashem Safieddine, the presumed next leader of the Iran-backed group, in an Israeli airstrike on southern Beirut earlier in October.
Earlier, in a statement on Tuesday, the Israeli military had said that strikes in the suburb of Dahiyeh had killed Safieddine and Ali Hussein Hazima, the head of the militant group’s intelligence branch, three weeks ago.
Safieddine, head of Hezbollah’s executive council and a potential successor to Nasrallah, had been missing since Israeli airstrikes at Hezbollah’s main intelligence headquarters in Dahiyeh on October 3. Israel claimed the strikes targeted an underground bunker, where he was staying.
Rescue teams were unable to reach the site, and Hezbollah had reportedly lost contact with Safieddine since the attack.
