Canada Federal Election Results 2025 LIVE Updates: Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won Canada’s federal election with 169 seats, and US President Donald Trump congratulated the Canadian PM over a telephonic conversation on the victory. However, Carney failed to cross the majority mark – 172 out of the House of Commons’ 343 seats – that would have allowed them to form the government without the support of any other smaller party. His Indian counterpart PM Narendra Modi, in a post on X, congratulated Carney on the win and said the two countries are “bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties.”
Carney hits out at Trump in victory speech: In his victory speech in Ottawa, Carney said the mutually beneficial system Canada and the US had shared since World War II had ended. “These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never … ever happen,” he said, stressing the importance of Canadian unity in the face of US’ threats. “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he added.

What Poilievre said on Conservatives’ loss: Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat to the Liberals and stated that his party would hold the government to account, Reuters reported. Poilievre, who failed to make the election a referendum on former PM Justin Trudeau, said: “We are cognizant of the fact that we didn’t get over the finish line yet”. His popularity is said to have declined toward the end of his decade in power as food and housing prices rose. “We know that change is needed, but change is hard to come by. It takes time,” he said, speaking to supporters in Ottawa.

Canada Election 2025 LIVE Updates: Canadians vote amidst Trump's shadow and domestic turmoil
Canadians are heading to the polls in a pivotal federal election, with the outcome hanging precariously in the balance. The campaign, marked by intense debate and unprecedented external influences, has been overshadowed by US President Donald Trump's threats to Canada's sovereignty and escalating trade tensions. In a surprising turn, Trump's renewed threats to annex Canada have dominated the final days of the election, forcing Canadian leaders to respond and voters to reconsider their priorities.
The election landscape shifted dramatically after Mark Carney took over the Liberal Party leadership in March. With Trump's actions dominating headlines, Carney has framed the election as a choice between stability and uncertainty, emphasizing the need to protect Canada's interests. A recent attack at a Vancouver festival has added to the campaign's complexity, briefly halting Carney's campaign and leaving the nation in shock. As voters cast their ballots, the potential outcomes remain uncertain, with possibilities ranging from a Conservative majority to a hung parliament.-The Guardian

Canada Election 2025 LIVE Updates: Why did Justin Trudeau step down as Liberal Party leader?
Justin Trudeau stepped down as Canada's Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader due to intense pressure and declining popularity. After nine years in office, Trudeau faced criticism over rising costs, including soaring food and housing prices, and a surge in immigration. His decision comes just months before legislative elections, leaving the Liberal Party with a leadership challenge.
Key factors contributing to Trudeau's decision:
Internal Party Dissent: Trudeau faced growing dissatisfaction within his party, with some members questioning his leadership and ability to win the upcoming election.
Polling Numbers: The Liberal Party trailed the Conservative Party by a significant margin, making it challenging for Trudeau to secure a win in the next election.
US Tariff Threat: Trudeau's government faced criticism for not having a plan to deal with the proposed US tariffs, which added to the party's woes.
Cabinet Resignation: The resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who disagreed with Trudeau's approach to US tariffs, further weakened his position.
Trudeau's resignation paves the way for a new leader to take the helm of the Liberal Party and potentially shift the country's direction. With elections looming, the party's future hangs in the balance as it searches for a fresh face to lead the charge.
