FYI:

— Chabahar port is situated at the mouth of the Gulf of Oman, it is Iran’s first deepwater port that puts the country on the global oceanic trade route map.

— The port lies to the west of Iran’s border with Pakistan, about as far as Gwadar, a competing port developed by China in Pakistan, lies to the east of the border.

— Chabahar is strategically important for both Iran and India. It has the potential to assist Tehran avoid the effects of Western sanctions while also providing New Delhi with an alternative route that avoids Pakistan, which does not allow India land access for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia.

— The port is also part of the proposed International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a multi-modal transportation project linking the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea via Iran, and onward to northern Europe via St Petersburg in Russia.

Chabahar port location

— There are two distinct ports in the Chabahar project, Shahid Beheshti and Shahid Kalantari. India’s investment is restricted to the Shahid Beheshti port.

— The development was also seen as a return to so-called ‘Panda diplomacy’ — China leveraging the fluffy creatures, unique to its geography, to build ties with nations.

— Pandas are native to China and are only found there in the wild at present. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the animal was once “widespread throughout southern and eastern China, as well as neighbouring Myanmar and northern Vietnam.”

— The MoU addresses bilateral cooperation to detect and interdict illicit trafficking in special nuclear material and other radioactive material through technical and methodological cooperation, including the installation and improvement of technical systems for the detection and identification of such material at Sri Lanka’s border crossing control points.

5. (d)

FYI:

— Algeria inaugurated “Africa’s biggest mosque” and the third-biggest mosque in the world, following over a decade of construction and preparation marred by controversy.

— The Great Mosque of Algiers is situated in the capital, with a minaret towering 265 meters (869 feet) high and a large prayer room.

— The mosque was the brainchild of the late, ousted President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was removed following protests in 2019. Bouteflika wanted the mosque to be his legacy, similar to Mosque Hassan II in Casablanca, Morocco, Algeria’s neighbor and regional rival.
