— According to the latest official figures, the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the High Atlas Mountains late on Sept. 8 killed 2,946 people and injured 5,674, making it Morocco’s deadliest since 1960 and most powerful since at least 1900.

— While organised camps of huge, government-issued tents and military field clinics have sprouted up in some of the larger cities, areas of the rough terrain are still living on contributions left by individuals along roadsides.

— The city of Marrakech, which was about 72 km from the epicentre and suffered some damage, will host the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund as planned on Oct. 9-15.

— The Atlas Mountains separates the Sahara Desert from the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans. It stretches through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

— As part of its endeavour to transition to green energy, the Danish government authorised a plan to develop an artificial island in the North Sea. With a projected cost of DKK 210 billion, the project is being billed as the greatest building project in Danish history.

— An energy island is based on a platform that serves as a hub for electricity generation from surrounding offshore wind farms.

— The idea is to connect and distribute power between Denmark and neighbouring countries. Denmark has already entered into agreements with the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium to begin the joint analysis of connections in the energy island.

— The decision comes after the EU declared ambitions to restructure its electrical grid to rely primarily on renewables within a decade and to more than double its offshore wind energy capacity by 2050.

— The artificial island is located about 80 km into the North Sea and the majority of it will be owned by the Danish government. Its primary purpose is to provide large-scale offshore wind power.

— The high risk of kidnapping and sexual assault in Reynosa and Matamoros is one of the factors pushing migrants to cross illegally, four advocates said. Crossings border-wide surged in September.

— Residents in parts of coastal North Carolina and Virginia experienced flooding after tropical storm Ophelia made landfall near a North Carolina barrier island.

— The winds weakened as the storm moved north, with the storm’s centre passing into Virginia by nightfall, according to the US National Hurricane Centre. It did, however, continue to pose a risk of coastal flooding and flash floods in the mid-Atlantic region.
