Putting an end to their long-standing policy, Saudi Arabia ruled that women would now be allowed to drive. The breakthrough decision was announced on Tuesday in a royal decree reported by Saudi Press Agency and read live on state TV. Until now, Saudi Arabia was the only country in the world to restrict women from driving. Turning a new leaf, Saudi Arabia is all set to revive its international reputation with the hope that women’s participation will help their economy.
Set to take effect from July 2018, women will be able to drive their own cars and also apply for a driving licence. As soon as the news surfaced on social media, Netizens couldn’t stop themselves from cheering and celebrating the good move. With hashtags like #Iammyownguardian, #SaudiWomenDriving and #SaudiWomenCanDrive, Twitter has been buzzing with happy tweets from people.
While some poured in heartfelt quotes, others added a punch of humour in their tweets. “You want a statement here is one: ‘Saudi Arabia will never be the same again. The rain begins with a single drop’,” one of them wrote, and another user tweeted: “To all the Saudi women who fought courageously for our right to drive, thank you!!”
