While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to withdraw Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation, netizens flooded the internet with memes. The RBI has asked everyone to exchange these notes by September 30,2023. The Rs 2,000 notes, however, will continue to be legal tender.

Several memes showed people paying last respects to these notes with comments like ‘RIP Rs 2000’. Another meme depicted a conversation between old Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes (that was demonetised in 2016) and Rs 2000 notes, with old currency notes can be seen saying “Hum bhi pele gaye the, tum bhi pele jaoge”.

Several memes also played on the theories that got popular during demonestisation about the then new Rs 2000 notes having nano-GPS chip.

A video of a party worker hugging the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and crying turned into a meme fest, with the user referring it as “people who have a lot of Rs 2000 notes at home”

The Rs 2,000 denomination currency note was introduced in November 2016 following the demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and the old Rs 500 banknotes.

Meanwhile, another pointed out a joke that standup comedian Samay Raina said. In one of his shows he is seen saying “Should I give you some spoilers from the future? You know the 2000 currency note? It’s going to be banned”.

Another depicted a scene from the popular Indian sitcom ‘Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashma’ where several characters (labelled as the RBI, the old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes) are seen escorting a single person (the Rs 2000 note) out.
