London-based tech startup Nothing has revealed the official name for its upcoming smartphone – Phone (2a), adding that the phone will still be a noticeable upgrade over the original Phone (1). The announcement came as part of the company’s latest quarterly community update, where Nothing also shared details on expanding engineering capabilities and plans for new products.

Of course, the name reveal isn’t anything new considering ‘Phone (2a)’ has been floating around on the internet for months now. But this is perhaps the first time that the company has confirmed it.

Codenamed “Aerodactyl,” the upcoming handset will build upon the features and design of the Phone (2) while being a “clear upgrade compared to Phone (1) on every front,” the company says. Given Nothing’s track record of creative device design, we can likely expect some unique flair with the Phone (2a) as well.

In addition to the name reveal, Nothing shared plans to launch a Glyph Developer Kit, giving third-party Android developers the ability to take control of the distinctive Glyph interface on Nothing phones. This could allow for more customisation and personalised smartphone experiences.

Nothing also announced Jillian Gerngross as the new VP of Marketing. With over a decade of experience at Amazon Music, she will oversee global marketing strategy and product launches.

Beyond the community update, Nothing’s CMF division teased that new CMF Buds and CMF Neckband Pro audio accessories are arriving soon. The CMF Buds Pro were launched September last year for Rs 3,499. These earbuds will soon be joined by an even more affordable variant.

With rumours of a February release, it seems Nothing is gearing up for the Phone (2a) launch with expanded engineering, new marketing leadership, and plans to further integrate the Glyph interface. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming smartphone.
