Deepika Chowdhury, a 34-year-old molecular biologist with the National Institute Of Virology (NIV), Pune, bagged the top rank at the World Powerlifting Championship in the Under 60 kg weight category.

The championship was conducted under the aegis of the World Powerlifting Union in New Delhi between October 23 and 27. A total of 75 women from different countries participated.

In March this year, Chowdhury had ranked seventh at the Arnold Classic, which was held in Australia. She is the only female athlete in India to hold a pro card in bodybuilding and has competed against 20 contestants from across the world for the ‘best body’.

This virologist had started competing in 2014 and, within two years, she got her pro card. Three years later, she has ranked seventh in the world.

She said, “I plan to compete again for the Arnold Classic that will be held in March 2018.” With biology and bodybuilding being her passion, Deepika admits the journey to follow both the careers has not been easy. “My work at NIV is really exciting and I have the support of the director and staff,” she added.
