As we approach the 2015 edition of the World Cup, here’s a quick look at the India-Pakistan contests over the years. The two teams have played each other four times in the mega event and on all four occasions India have emerged victorious. Arch-rivals have enjoyed heated contests in the middle. May it be the Kiran More-Javed Miandad incident or Ajay Jadeja’s assault in the ’96 World Cup, the neighbours have played gripping cricket. A look at the contests:
1992 World Cup
India batted first and posted a moderate total of 216 courtesy knocks from Sachin Tendulkar (54) and Ajay Jadeja (46). In reply, Pakistan made a mess of it losing 8 wickets for only 68 runs. The match was marred by the verbal exchanges between India wicketkeeper Kiran More and Pakistan’s Javed Miandad. India got the better of its rivals as they won the game by 43 runs.
1996 World Cup
In this thriller of a match at M Chninnaswamy stadium in Bangalore, India were propelled to a respectable total by Ajay Jadeja who slammed 45 in 25 balls. Chasing 288 for victory, Pakistan were cruising before Indian bowlers pulled things back with wickets at regular intervals. India won the game by 39 runs to the delight of the home crowd.
1999 World Cup
Amidst the war in Kargil, the neighbours clashed for the third time at the mega event. On a seaming track at Old Trafford, Venkatesh Prasad run riot registering the figures of 5/27. Pakistan were all over the place. India’s 227 proved too much for Wasim Akram and Co and India made it three out of three at the World Cup.
