Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will make a return to the Indian colors after a while in the upcoming Australia series. With Shubman Gill named the new skipper as the side for the ODI’s uncertainty looms over the futures of Rohit and Kohli. However, on Tuesday, the Indian Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, after the win against West Indies, acknowledged that the 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away, and it is important to stay in the present when asked about Rohit and Kohli.

“The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is very important to stay in the present. Obviously, they are quality players. They are coming back. Their experience is going to be valuable in Australia. Hopefully, those two guys can have a successful tour, and more importantly, as a team, we can have a successful series,” said Gambhir, addressing the press conference.

“They are people who have won so many matches in the past. They have been playing for India for the past 10-15 years; the experience they bring to the table is something every captain and every team wants. That’s what we are looking forward to. We want them to go out there and do their magic,” Gill told broadcasters Star Sports

“The experience the two of them have (is immense), and there are very few players who can match the number of matches they have won for India. There are very few players in the world with such skill and quality along with that experience, and we look at it from that perspective,” Gill said at the start of the Test match.

“So many qualities that I have inherited from Rohit bhai – the calmness that he possesses, and the kind of friendship that he has among the group is something that I aspire to; these are the qualities that I want to take from him,” he added.

Indian Chief selector Ajit Agarkar while announcing the squad for the Australia series, said: I mean, that’s the format they are at the moment playing (Virat and Rohit). We picked them, but as far as the 2027 World Cup is concerned. I don’t think we need to talk about it today. Obviously, with the captaincy change, that’s generally the thought.
