Quiet diplomacy with groups to help prepare J-K package

The Centre said one-on-one talks in 'quiet diplomacy' with various groups in J-K would help it discover the contours of proposals.

The Centre on Friday said one-on-one talks in ‘quiet diplomacy’ with various groups in Jammu and Kashmir would help it discover the contours of proposals which could be considered while working out a package for the state.

“I think,at least in the early stages, the talks should be held one-on-one or one with two or three people so that we discover the contours of the proposals of the each group,” Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters here.

He said such an approach would help the Centre to work out the common features and “then we can perhaps put down on paper what is the outline of the package.”

“Until we reach that stage,I think it is best that the talks remain quiet, behind the scenes away from the glare of the media,” Chidamabaram said.

The Home Minister has mooted the proposal of pursuing quiet diplomacy to address problems of Jammu and Kashmir during his visit to Srinagar earlier this week.

Chidambaram said he would visit Srinagar once every six weeks to review the progress achieved on the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s reconstruction package being implemented in the state.

Concluding his two-day visit to the Kashmir valley, the Prime Minister had voiced hope that separatists and others would reciprocate his appeal for a dialogue with all sections of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
