Two Rohingya people, including a woman, were arrested from Tripura’s Khowai district during their routine checking on Friday, the police said.

A case was lodged at Mungiakami police station and further investigation is on to find out the details on how they arrived on the Indian territory in Tripura or where they were headed to, the police said in Agartala on Saturday.

“After searching them, we got their identification documents that revealed they were Rohingyas,” Goutam Debbarma, officer in-charge of Mungiakami station, said.

The police said that they spotted three individuals travelling in a vehicle at 41 Mile area, Teliamura, on Thursday. On seeing the police, one of them fled away leaving behind his companions who were later detained, officials said.

Debbarma also said that the Rohingyas hired the vehicle driver, identified as Pankaj Das, from Ampi Chowmuhani in Teliamura to take them to Ambassa in Dhalai district for a fare of Rs 500.

According to a recent BSF report, 1,018 individuals were arrested between January 2023 and April this year while illegally crossing the border in different parts of Tripura. They included 498 Bangladeshi citizens, 396 Indian nationals and 124 Rohingyas.

Tripura has a 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh, parts of which are still unfenced due to local disputes. Six out of the 11 unfenced patches in the border was covered by fencing and the rest would be completed next year.

Though six patches were fenced with single row fencing, the total length of the newly fenced border is 7 km, which still leaves five other patches comprising several Kms to be fenced through dialogue between the two countries and nearby villagers.
