India and Pakistan should do away with visas for travel between the two countries, ruling PPP Chairman Asif Ali Zardari said on Friday.

Zardari said both he and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif agreed ‘on the fact that there should be no visa requirements in India-Pakistan relations’.

“But let’s formulate a policy for that and let us bring it to Parliament. I shall request the government of the day to bring such a law in Parliament (which is the) forum of the people,” he said addressing a conference organised by the South Asian Free Media Association.

The debate could focus on various aspects of the issue, including whether visas should be completely done away with by the two countries, or there should be a ‘wait period’ for getting a visa, or a ‘categorised visa’.

He pointed out that the matter could take some time to be settled, saying ‘Rome was not built in a day’.
