The nuclear deal may be the bone of contention between the Left and the UPA, but CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat has won over some top Congress leaders by his “seriousness of approach” and “grasp” of subject at negotiations. According to Congress members of the UPA-Left committee on the 123 agreement, Karat is the only one who talks on behalf of the Left (the Government is represented by Pranab Mukherjee on the political and P Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal on the technical aspects of the nuke deal). “Prakash knows the subject and he argues well. Except for some jokes occasionally cracked by Sitaram Yechury or AB Bardhan, nobody from the Left speaks. Prakash remains focused on the subject,” said a senior committee member.
