CALCUTTA, June 17: The Dhaka Football League champions Mukti Joddha were handed over the McDowell Cup and the winners cheque for Rs 1.5 lakh at a simple ceremony here today. The Bangladesh champions won the Cup by default after East Bengal and Mohun Bagan withdrew from the tournament.
While accepting the award, Mukti Joddha manager Jahangir Alam said that although their aim was to take home the trophy, they were not happy at winning it this way. They would have preferred playing the final. In a friendly gesture, the Bangladesh side also gave away mementos to the IFA and McDowell officials. This was the club’s second visit to India, having played in the Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup a few years ago.
