PANAJI, JANUARY 10: An eight-month old infant lost her life after she was reportedly bitten by wild ants at Bal Niketan, an orphanage run by the Goa Government.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon when the maidservant who was looking after the girl Swizal alias Ravis, allegedly left her on the ground unattended and went to wash clothes. When she returned, she saw the infant being bitten by wild ants. The child was taken to the civil hospital where doctors declared her dead.

Meanwhile, State Women and Child Development Minister Victoria Fernandes has ordered suspension of the maidsevant and a departmental inquiry is being conducted into the incident.

As many as 62 children, including 15 below the age of one year, are inmates of the Bal Niketan complex.
