The Punjab government has decided not to grant remissions to rape convicts and those guilty of multiple murders. After being repeatedly ticked off by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on the issue,a decision to this effect was taken at a meeting headed by Punjab Home Secretary A R Talwar. The final approval of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is awaited.

We have taken a decision not to grant even a single remission to any rape convict or a person who has been held guilty of committing multiple murders, Talwar said.

On almost every hearing by different Benches of the HC,the state has been at the receiving end for granting remissions to rape convicts. As many as 32 rapists between 2003 and 2009 were released due to the remissions given by the state government.
