A sarpanch was arrested on Monday for allegedly setting afire his sister-in-law over a property dispute in Rohna village of Betul district in Madhya Pradesh.
The 60-year-old victim,Chandrakala,was battling for her life at a hospital in Amraoti,a nearby town in Maharashtra,with more than 70 per cent burns.
Besides Maruti,the 45-year-old sarpanch,the police also arrested his 20-year-old son Rajesh for the crime.
Chandrakala alleged that the duo,who live across the road from her house,set her afire late on Friday after a dispute over land.
Investigating Officer B S Vadiwa said though there were no eyewitnesses,the police had booked the duo based on the victims statement to them in the hospital. He said the victims relatives too did not witness the crime though they were nearby.
