India bank loans up 17.2 pct

Indian bank loans rose 17.2 percent on year as of May 7,the central bank's weekly statistical supplement (WSS) showed on Friday.

Indian bank loans rose 17.2 percent on year as of May 7,the central bank’s (RBI) weekly statistical supplement (WSS) showed on Friday.

Deposits were up 14.7 percent from a year earlier.

Outstanding loans rose 130.30 billion rupees ($2.8 billion) to 32.28 trillion rupees in the two weeks to May 7.

Non-food credit rose 83.82 billion rupees to 31.75 trillion rupees and food credit rose by 46.48 billion rupees to 526.27 billion rupees,the bank said.

Bank deposits rose by 244.71 billion rupees to 45.31 trillion rupees in the two weeks to May 7,the WSS showed. ($1 = 46.9 Indian rupees)
