Giving relief to news broadcasters,the Delhi High Court Tuesday restrained the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) from taking any coercive action against news broadcasters in the case related to cap on advertisements on television channels.
The courts order came on a plea filed by the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) challenging TRAIs regulation mandating a 12-minute per hour cap on advertisements.
The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) had dismissed the appeal by the NBA last week following the Supreme Courts judgment which said TDSAT did not have the jurisdiction to hear the plea against regulations framed by TRAI.
The Bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Manmohan admitted the news broadcasters plea for March 13 and said till then no coercive action will be taken by TRAI. The Bench also asked the broadcasters to submit a weekly report on the duration of advertisements they carry on their channels to the regulatory authority.
