The two-and-a-half-year-old marriage of Amaresh Singh and Neetu Singh was annulled today after a Kathmandu district court accepting their divorce plea.

Neetu and Amaresh told the court that their relationship was beyond repair, and they would like to live separately.

The couple’s marital discord became public after The Indian Express reported that Neetu,a final year editing student at Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII),had been deported on charges of indulging in anti-India activities on December 5. Neetu alleged that her husband — Nepal’s self-proclaimed ‘man in India’ — had used his clout with Indian authorities to have her deported.

Amaresh,a former Nepali Congress parliamentarian, was asked by the judge on several occasions to be respectful towards Neetu while speaking in court today.

Neetu said she was happy with the decision, but did not discuss her plans,or whether she would return to complete her course at FTII.

Amaresh blamed the media — specifically the The Indian Express — for the situation. “Mercifully, the procedure did not take that long, and I thank you for this,” he said.

The Maharashtra government revoked its deportation order and the ‘conditions’ for Neetu’s return after the public outcry that followed the reports. Amaresh left New Delhi in the first week of January after submitting his Ph.D thesis to JNU.
