Under fire from opposition over last weeks spurious liquor tragedy that killed 34 people,Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday wrote to Home Minister P Chidambaram to expedite presidential assent to the Orissa Excise Act,2009.
Naveen,who spoke to Chidambaram on Tuesday evening,in his letter on Wednesday urged him to expedite the Bill which was sent to the Home Ministry on January 28,2009.

The proposed legislation has provision of life imprisonment over liquor tragedy cases. Under the new Act,excise officers would have powers of a police officials under the CrPC 1973. Provisions of compensation to victims has also been made.
A provision has also been made for confiscation of illegal properties acquired by bootleggers.
