Close shave for women Kabaddi team

Two persons died and several others sustained injuries,as a bus carrying players of the Indian women Kabaddi team collided head-on with an Army truck coming from opposite side near Bhucho Khurd,on Bathinda-Barnala Road,in Bathinda on Thursday evening.

The deceased included the driver of the bus and head constable Harjeet Singh,who was driving the escort gypsy ahead of the bus. The 14-member Indian squad,besides six officials,had a narrow shave with a number of players sustaining injuries — ranging from bruises to a few fractures.

The team was on its way to Bathinda from Ludhiana to play the semi-final match against the United States on Friday in the ongoing World Cup Kabaddi. It was scheduled to go to Badal village late in the evening for a dinner hosted for the teams participating in the tournament.

Bathinda SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said inquiries have revealed that the accident occurred after “the Army truck suddenly came on the road from cantonment and first hit the gypsy before colliding head on with the bus”. “A case is being registered against Army truck driver,” he added. Following the accident,both vehicles caught fire. The bus driver was burnt alive,as he reportedly fell unconscious. Head Constable Harjeet Singh died when the Army truck hit his gypsy before collided with the bus.
