At the Cabinet meeting last Thursday,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh informed the rest about his decision to appoint Nandan Nilekani as chairperson of the UID Authority. He said Nilekani had sought Cabinet rank,and he had agreed to it. This left some Cabinet Ministers confused. The Cabinet note specifically mentioned that Nilekani would be working under Planning Commission. As Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia also holds Cabinet rank,ministers were confused about how Nilekani could work under another authority with the same rank.
