Maharashtra State Minorities Commission Chairman Ameen Khandwani today said the recital of the national song, Vande Mataram, should not be made compulsory for Muslims.

Khandwani told reporters that though he respected the national song, he believed it was about worshipping the motherland and that Muslims should not be made to recite it as their religion recognises only one God.

In the monsoon session of the Assembly, the Shiv Sena-BJP combine had created ruckus over the opposition to reciting Vande Mataram at the general body meeting of the Malegaon Municipal Corporation.
