GHENT (BELGIUM), JUNE 12: Italian and Turkish football fans fought Belgian police and each other during a live broadcast of a Euro 2000 championship match between their teams, the Belgian agency Belga said. About 1,000 supporters of the two teams were watching the match on a giant screen yesterday at Racing Genk Stadium in the northern Belgian town of Ghent, when Belgian police blocked fans trying to reach the field.

The face-off quickly led to clashes between baton-wielding police and several dozen fans, who also began fighting each other. A number of people were slightly hurt, but police did not say if there had been any arrests.

The match itself was played at the Gelredome Stadium in the Dutch city of Arnhem, where Italy won 2-1 after a controversial second-half penalty.
