The Samaspur bird sanctuary in Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli constituency is to be the focal point for her plans to develop the region as a tourist destination.

After a recent trip by Central government officers, the local administration has sought Rs 8 crore to develop the sanctuary which is on the Salon Unchahaar road. It also has the biggest water body in the state. ‘‘The area has over 500 acre forest cover and has a huge water body comprising six different lakes that are interlinked,’’ said Mahendra Singh, Chief Conservator of Forests.

Singh claims that this is the only sanctuary in UP that has water even in the summer. ‘‘The area will have battery operated buses for tourists and boating facilities. Besides, the development plan includes construction of huts and pathways,’’ UP Tourism assistant director P.K. Singh added. The scheme also involves developing a memorial located in Munshiganj.

During her visit to the constituency in the first week of September, Sonia had visited some tourist spots and had seen their potential. Soon after her visit, senior officials, including the HUDCO Chairman and ITDC officials, had reached Rae Bareli to study the opportunities.
